This article was previously published under Q201005

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Proxy Server 2.0 Web Administration tool on a computer with Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and Service Pack 4 for Windows NT installed, you may receive the following error message:

System cannot log you on Object required Error number= 1A8

Also, the Proxy HTML Admin tool will stop functioning if you upgrade directly from Windows NT SP3 to SP5.

CAUSE

Internet Information Server does not have the correct application setting for the Proxy Server Web Administration tool, which requires script execute permission.

RESOLUTION

This problem is documented in the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 release notes as follows:

4.8 Microsoft Proxy Server

4.8.1 Web Administration Tool

After SP4 is installed, the Web Administration tool for Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 may stop working. This is because Internet Information Server does not have the correct application setting for the Proxy Server Web Administration tool, which requires script execute permission. This problem may only occur with Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 4 and the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. To correct the problem, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, point to Microsoft Internet Information Server, and then point to Internet Service Manager.
  2. Click Internet Information Server in the left pane.
  3. Double-click your server name in the right pane.
  4. Double-click MS Proxy Administration Web Site in the right pane.
  5. In the right pane, right click PrxAdmin, and then click Properties.
  6. Click the Virtual Directory tab.
  7. In the Application Settings section, set the Permissions to "Script."
  8. In the Application Settings section, click Create. If a Remove button is displayed and there is not a Create button, no further action is necessary (the system is already properly configured).
  9. Click OK.
You may have to restart your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Proxy Server version 2.0.
