SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Plus! 98 or attempt to start the version of the McAfee Virus Scan utility included in Plus! 98, you may receive an error message stating that the Mcscan32.dll file cannot be found.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Microsoft Windows 98 is configured to use the Czech, Hungarian, or any of the Spanish regional settings when you install Plus! 98.

  4. Click OK, quit all running programs, and then restart the computer.
  5. Insert the Plus! 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install Plus! 98.

  9. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
  10. Restart the computer.

Extract the Mcscan32.dll File

To extract the Mcscan32.dll file to your hard disk, follow these steps:

  1. Quit the version of McAfee Virus Scan included in Plus! 98.
  2. Insert the Plus! 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the Plus! 98 CD-ROM from starting automatically.

    md drive:\Program Files\Plus!\Viruscan\
    cd\windows\system
    extract cd-rom:\Plus98\Plus98.cab Mcscan32.dll
    exit

where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows is installed, windows is the folder in which Windows is installed, and cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  5. Click Start, and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    cd-rom:\Setup

where cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  7. On the Plus! 98 Setup screen, follow the instructions to install Plus! 98.
  8. When you receive the message Insert Disk: Please insert the Compact Disk labeled Windows Plus! 98, click OK.
  9. When you receive the message Files Needed: The file 'McScan32.dll' on Windows Plus! 98 CD-ROM is needed, click Skip File.
  10. When you receive the message Warning: If you skip this file Windows might not work correctly, click Yes.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue occurs because the Czech, Hungarian, and Spanish languages use a different dictionary sort order.

For example, the Czech language reads the CS text string as a single letter sorted after the letter C. This difference causes Plus! 98 Setup to look for the Mcsan32.dll file instead of the Mcscan32.dll file.

As the Plus! 98 Setup program cannot find or install the Mcscan32.dll file, Virus Scan is not installed completely.
