WD97: Hidden AutoNum Fields Show Result After Saved as Word 6.0/95 (199106)

SYMPTOMS

After you save as Word 6.0/95 and reopen your Word document containing a hidden AutoNum, AutoNumLgl, or AutoNumOut field, the results of the field will be displayed, even though you are not viewing hidden text.

NOTE: The results of the hidden AutoNum field appear on the screen and when you print the document.

WORKAROUND

Do not save your document as Word 6.0/95 (*.doc). Instead, save your document in Word 97 as Word Document (*.doc) and open your document in Word 6.0 for Windows or Word for Windows 95 using the Word 97-2000 import converter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.  This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 2000.

To not show (view) hidden text, do the following:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the View tab, click to clear the Hidden Text check box.
  3. Click OK.
