Proxy Cache Defaults to Largest NTFS Partition During Setup (199100)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q199100

SYMPTOMS

Small Business Server (SBS) setup will place the Proxy 2.0 cache on the largest NTFS partition it finds during setup, reguardless of the location of the Proxy 2.0 files.

CAUSE

This is the default behavior. The largest partition was chosen because of the large default size of the cache.

RESOLUTION

The cache can easily be removed from the default partition using IIS Manager. A new cache can be created on another NTFS partition or any number of NTFS partitions in combination.
  1. Open IIS Manager.
  2. Select Web Proxy, right-click and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Caching tab, and then click Cache Size.
  4. Select the drive with the existing cache.
  5. Change the maximum size to 0 (or to the preferred size), and then click Set.
  6. Select the drive on which you want to create a cache.
  7. Enter the size of the cache, and then click Set. (The default is 100 MB).
  8. Repeat for any additional partitions.
