This article was previously published under Q198351 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you copy, paste and link (paste link) an
assignment row in a usage view, you may experience one of the following
behaviors:
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if you are in either the Task Usage or Resource Usage view and you copy, paste and link an assignment row.
If you paste link the assignment with a task/resource row or blank row
selected, Microsoft Project overwrites the selected row and pastes the
assignment as a task or resource depending on the usage view.
If you paste link the assignment with an existing assignment selected, you
receive the error described in the "Symptoms" section.
WORKAROUNDCorrecting the Problem
To correct this problem after it occurs, use the appropriate method for
your situation:
If the Undo option is available, click Undo Paste Link on the Edit menu.
If the Undo option is not available, and if the assignment was pasted over an existing task or resource, follow these steps:
- On the Edit menu, click Links.
- Select the link (if known) and click Break Link. Click
Yes when asked if you are sure you want to remove these links.
Click Close.
- Manually correct the information for the task.
If the Undo option is not available, and if the assignment was pasted over a blank task or resource, follow these steps:
- Delete the Paste Linked row.
- Create a task or resource at the row you want.
- Create the assignment for the task or resource.
- Paste the assignment without linking it.
Individually paste and link fields from the assignment.
Avoiding the Problem
To avoid this problem, use either of the following methods:
- Paste the assignment without linking it to the source
assignment.
- Paste and link the needed assignment fields individually. To do
this, create an assignment for a task or resource. Copy and
Paste Link the fields you want to be linked.
