OL2000: Additional +1 Added to Phone Number of Contact (197065)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q197065

SYMPTOMS

When you type a telephone number in a phone number field of a Contact in Microsoft Outlook, you may see "+1" (without the quotation marks) automatically added before the area code of the phone number.

CAUSE

You have selected the dialing option to "Automatically add country code to local phone numbers."

MORE INFORMATION

You can set Outlook so that it automatically enters a +1 in the Phone Number field as you enter new local and long-distance telephone numbers. This provides added functionality, including:

  • Better handling of 10-digit telephone numbers
  • Better parsing of international telephone numbers
  • Fax numbers are automatically validated
Under most circumstances, you should not disable this option. If you experience problems related to this, you can disable the feature.

To disable the addition of the +1 in new telephone numbers, follow these steps:

  1. Click to select a Contact.
  2. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.
  3. Click Dialing Options, click to clear the check box for "Automatically add country code to local phone numbers."
  4. Click OK and Close.
When you add a new telephone number to a Contact, Outlook will not add the +1 prefix.

NOTE: The previous method affects all telephone numbers, including fax numbers.
