OL2000: How to Setup Fax Services for Outlook (195679)

SUMMARY

Two different fax services are available with Microsoft Outlook 2000, which depends on whether you chose a Corporate/Workgroup (CW) installation or an Internet Mail Only (IMO) installation.
  • If you chose the CW installation of Outlook, install Microsoft Fax from your Windows media, add it to your mail profile and then reinstall Office 2000.
  • If you chose the IMO installation of Outlook, the Symantec Fax Starter Edition is available as an add-in component.

Install Microsoft Fax for a CW Installation

You must first install Microsoft Fax from your Windows 95 setup medium and then reinstall Office 2000 to apply the fax update. If you run Windows 98, skip to the section "Install the Microsoft Fax service from Windows 98." After Microsoft Fax service is installed, add it as a service in the Mail control panel and then reinstall Office 2000.

NOTE: Windows Millennium does not include any fax software.

Install the Microsoft Fax Service from Windows 95

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Windows Setup tab, select Microsoft Fax, and click OK.

Install the Microsoft Fax Service from the Windows 98 CD-ROM

  1. On the Windows 98 CD-ROM, locate the file awfax.exe in

    <CD Drive>:\tools\OldWin95\message\us

    where <CD Drive> is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click Awfax.exe to install the fax.

Add Microsoft Fax to Your Mail Profile

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mail (or Mail and Fax) icon.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Select Microsoft Fax, and then click OK.

Reinstall Office 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, Select Microsoft Office 2000, and click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Repair Office.
  5. Select Reinstall Office 2000, and then click Finish.
When you first run Outlook after you install the fax program you may be prompted to enter some basic information regarding your location and phone number to be included on the fax cover sheet.

To Install the Fax Service with an IMO Installation

Use the Symantec Fax Starter Edition setup program.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Add or Remove Features.
  5. Click the plus (+) sign next to Microsoft Outlook for Windows to show the installation options for Outlook.
  6. Click the icon next to Symantec Fax Starter Edition, and then click Run From My Computer.
  7. Click Update Now.
After Symantec Fax Starter Edition is installed, start Outlook. If the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Setup Wizard does not start, close Outlook and run Olfsetup.exe.

To run Olfsetup.exe, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type Olfsetup.exe.
  3. In the Look In list, select your hard drive.
  4. Select the Include Subfolders check box, and click Find Now.
  5. When the file name is displayed in the lower pane, double-click the file name to start the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Setup Wizard.
