This article was previously published under Q195412 SYMPTOMS
If you edit an attachment by opening it from the Microsoft Outlook 2000
Preview Pane, you cannot save the changes using the same file name. When
you attempt to save the modified file you receive the following message:
<File name> is read-only. To save or copy, click OK, then give the
file a new name in the Save As dialog box.
CAUSE
The Preview Pane function is intended to be read-only, so changes are not
saved.
RESOLUTION
To edit an attachment, open the message containing the attachment and then
open the attachment. When you attempt to save the changes you will receive
the following message:
The file <file name> already exists. Do you want to replace
the existing file?
If you click Yes, you replace the original file with the version that
includes your changes.
MORE INFORMATION
The Preview Pane function allows you divide your Outlook window into two
separate panes. The contents of messages selected in the upper pane can be
viewed in the lower pane without opening the message. You can see the
message attachment in the preview pane and open it by double-clicking it.
However, it is opened as read-only. You cannot make
changes and then save the file with the original name.
