PRJ98: Crash When You Import Data in a Format Other Than *.MPP (195150)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you import data from a file format other than Microsoft Project format (*.MPP), you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Microsoft Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive the following error message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at address.

In Microsoft Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Winproj.exe Exception access violation number, Address address.

-or-

The instruction at "0x77f7d514" referenced memory at "address". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the application.

CAUSE

This problem may occur as a result of any of the following causes.

Cause 1

You import an Excel workbook, and a cell that you are importing contains more than 255 characters.

Cause 2

You import an Excel workbook, and in the Define Import/Export Map dialog box, the Method for incorporating imported data is set to Merge (by key) into current project.

Cause 3

You import a text file (*.TXT or *.CSV) and include the assignment field Task Name or Resource Name in the Define Import/Export Map dialog box.

The length of data you are importing into either field is greater than 255 characters.

Cause 4

You import data into a consolidated project, and in the Define Import/Export Map dialog box, the Method for incorporating imported data is set to Merge (by key) into current project.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method for your situation.

NOTE: There are no workarounds for cause 4.

Workaround for Cause 1

If you are importing an Excel workbook, change all cells in the workbook to contain 255 characters or fewer.

Workaround for Cause 2

In Excel, save your workbook as .CSV or .TXT, then import the workbook in Microsoft Project.

Workaround for Cause 3

If you are importing a text file, edit the text file and change the assignment task name or resource name to be 255 characters or fewer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
