Effects Tab Missing in Display Properties Dialog Box (194148)

SYMPTOMS

When you view the Display Properties dialog box, the Effects tab may be missing, and you may see a Plus! tab even if Microsoft Plus! for Windows 98 is not installed on your computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Microsoft Windows 95 font smoothing is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, uninstall Windows 95 font smoothing and then reinstall Windows 98. To uninstall Windows 95 font smoothing, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click "Windows 95 Font Smoothing (Uninstall Only)", and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Windows 98 includes font smoothing components. As stated on the Web site, installing Windows 95 font smoother in Windows 98 results in the deletion of these font smoothing components.
