Works: Text Missing After Importing Word File with Comments (193786)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works 4.5
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0

This article was previously published under Q193786

SYMPTOMS

When you use Works for Windows to open a Microsoft Word document that contains comments, all text following the first comment in the document may be missing.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Works import filter for Microsoft Word documents does not support the comment feature. Because the comment feature is not available in Works, the program stops the conversion process when it finds the first comment in a document, and it does not convert or display the text after the comment.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Works 6.

MORE INFORMATION

To work around this issue, save your Microsoft Word file in the Works 4.0 for Windows format or in Rich Test Format (.rtf). When you save your file in either of these formats, you lose the comments you added using Microsoft Word, but the program correctly converts the document text to the format you want.

To save your Microsoft Word file in the Works for Windows 4.0 or .rtf format:
  1. Open the document in Word.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save As Type box, click Works 4.0 for Windows (*.wps), or Rich Text Format (*.rtf).
  4. Click Save.
  5. Start Works for Windows, and then open the document.
NOTE: To save your Microsoft Word document in the Works or .rtf formats, you must have the Microsoft Word 97 import converter (Wrd97cnv.exe) installed on the computer.
