SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the release version of Site Server 3.0, you receive the following error:
You must remove Site Server (Beta) before you install Site Server 3.0. You will lose critical data if you remove the beta before performing some of the procedures provided in this document. Many of the procedures described below need to be performed using the beta version of Site Server. If Setup for Site Server 3.0 is currently running on your computer, you must cancel Setup, perform the following procedures, and then start Setup again. Following the steps in this document will ensure a successful upgrade experience.

CAUSE

The release version of Site Server 3.0 requires that the beta version be uninstalled first. However, Site Server 3.0 installation will also halt with this error message if the following registry key is missing or has a value less than 3.0:

Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Site Server\CurrentVersion

NOTE: There is a space between "Site" and "Server"

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

If the CurrentVersion key is missing, delete the entire hive starting at:

Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Site Server

If the CurrentVersion key exists but is something other than 3.0, uninstall the previous version of the Site Server beta.

MORE INFORMATION

If the installation of Site Server 3.0 is canceled or aborted, the CurrentVersion key may be left blank. Subsequent Site Server 3.0 installation attempts will fail until the registry key is removed.
