When you use a redirect wildcard that begins with an asterisk and a
semicolon (*;) as described in the Help file, you will receive the
following error message:
The path is not a valid URL.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Information
Server version 4.0.
This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and WindowsNT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.MORE INFORMATION
Redirect variables are used to pass portions of the original URL with the
destination URL. Redirect wildcards are used to match any number of
characters in the original URL.
