DSS80: Cannot Hear Audio Playback Through Speakers (191964)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 1.0

This article was previously published under Q191964

SYMPTOMS

When you connect the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 (DSS80) hardware to your computer's Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, you may not hear audio playback through the speakers.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the USB data transfer process between your computer and the DSS80 hardware is not synchronized.

NOTE: This behavior can occur if other USB devices are working properly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your computer manufacturer to inquire about correcting the timing of the USB frame rate on your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

All USB data exchanges are initiated by the computer. Data is exchanged inside frames with a uniform duration of one millisecond. A special data packet called Start Of Frame within each frame signals the beginning of the frame.

Some USB host controllers, particularly those using the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI), cannot support the data transfer necessary to support streaming audio. Contact your computer manufacturer to inquire about the configuration specific to your computer.

Devices such as mice and joysticks use small, infrequent data exchanges which are not affected by frame rate timing. Streaming audio, such as CD audio, requires guaranteed access to the USB and relies on proper frame rate timing to receive information correctly.
