SYMPTOMS

If you synchronize files on a Handheld PC (H/PC) with a desktop computer, and then open a folder located in the Mobile Devices folder on the desktop computer, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • All running programs quit unexpectedly.
  • All icons on the taskbar disappear except for the clock and the Start button.
  • You receive an "Invalid Page Fault" error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the total length of the path to the folder on the H/PC is greater than 128 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the folders on the H/PC that contain the folder you opened on the desktop computer, and then synchronize the H/PC with the desktop computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Press and hold down the ALT key, tap the folder you want to rename, and then tap Rename.
  2. Type a shorter name for the folder, and then press ENTER.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for each folder on the H/PC in which the folder you opened on the desktop computer is contained until the total length of the path to the folder on the H/PC contains less than 128 characters.
  4. Synchronize the H/PC with the desktop computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed in the applies to section of this article.
