SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Windows 98 on a Gateway 2000 Solo 2100 laptop computer, Windows 98 Setup may not automatically detect your IntelliMouse pointing device.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Gateway 2000 Solo 2100 laptop computer checks for a 3-byte data packet from the mouse, and the IntelliMouse sends a 4-byte data packet.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Add New Hardware wizard to install the IntelliMouse, or use the PS/2 to Serial converter to connect the mouse to the serial port on the computer.
