"Earlier Version of MSN Detected" Using Inbox Icon (189077)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Outlook 98 by using the Inbox icon on the desktop, you may receive a message stating that you have an earlier version of MSN, The Microsoft Network, installed and that a newer version is available. When this occurs, you have the following options:
  • Install a newer version of MSN
  • Continue to start your mail program
  • Cancel
Note that when you install Outlook 98, the Inbox icon is normally changed to an Outlook icon, but in some cases the Inbox icon may not be changed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, either create a new Outlook shortcut or use the Chnginbx.exe tool.

Method 1

To create a new desktop icon that starts Outlook 98:
  1. Locate the Outlook shortcut on the Start menu.
  2. Right-click the Outlook icon, and then click Copy.
  3. Right-click the desktop, and then click Paste.

Method 2

Run the Chnginbx.exe tool located in the following folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM:

Tools\Mtsutil

This tool changes the Inbox icon to an Outlook icon.
