Word 7.0

The Microsoft Office version 7.0 programs are designed to work with a 32- bit MAPI client (such as Microsoft Exchange) or a 16-bit VIM application (such as Lotus cc:Mail and Lotus Notes Mail) on a computer running Windows 95. The Office version 7.0 and later programs do not work with Microsoft Mail (16-bit MAPI client) running under Windows 95. Make sure you have installed Microsoft Exchange on your system or any mail system compatible with the Messaging Application Programming Interface [MAPI], or Lotus cc:Mail or any mail system compatible with Vendor Independent Messaging [VIM].

If you have installed Microsoft Exchange or a compatible mail system, make sure the WIN.INI file contains the following lines, or add them: 
   [MAIL]
   MAPI=1

If you have installed Lotus cc:Mail or a compatible mail system, make sure MAPIVI32.DLL and MAPIVITK.DLL are in the Windows System folder.

Word 6.0

The Send command is available only if you have installed Microsoft Mail version 3.0 or later and the following entry is included in the Windows Win.ini file: 
   [Mail]
   MAPI=1
Word does not display the Send command on the File menu when the Win.ini file does not contain the above entry, even when you make the assignment using the Options command on the Tools menu. Word appears to accept the menu assignment, but Send does not appear on the menu you assigned it to. If you save the global glossary and command changes after you attempt to assign Send to a menu, Word saves the change to the menu structure but does not display the Send command unless the MAPI=1 line is present in the [Mail] section of the Win.ini file.

MAPI

The Send command works correctly only if your mail program is MAPI compliant, regardless of the presence or absence of the Win.ini file entry mentioned above.

The MAPI=1 line in the [Mail] section of your Win.ini file also determines whether the Send Mail As Attachment option appears under on the General tab of the Options dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Options). If you select the Send Mail As Attachment option, Word embeds the current document as an attachment in a mail message. If you cancel the selection of this option, Word inserts the text of the current document in a mail message.
