This article was previously published under Q188824

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you close a project that shares resources from a resource pool, you may receive either of the following error messages.

In Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the Problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following error message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at <address>.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Exception access violation (0xc0000005), Address <address>.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • A consolidated project contains an inserted project that is not linked to the source project.

  • The consolidated project is sharing a resource pool and that resource pool is open as read-only.

  • You close and save the consolidated project and save changes to the resource pool when prompted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Close the resource pool before inserting the project. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Window menu, click the name of the project that is the resource pool.
  2. On the File menu, click Close. If prompted to save changes, click Yes.
NOTE: If you see duplicate resources in the resource pool, all of the assignments are assigned to the first resource with a given name that is listed in the resource pool. To remove these duplicate resources that do not have assignments, please see following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Method 2

When you insert projects connected to a shared resource pool, link the project to the source file. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Insert menu, click Project.
  2. In the Insert Project dialog box, click the name of the project that you want to insert. Then click to select Link To Project.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If the consolidated project shares resources from the same pool as the inserted project, Microsoft Project 98 will stop responding without providing any error message.
