WD98: Caption Inserted in Text Box Not Cross-referenced (188547)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q188547 SYMPTOMS
When you insert a caption inside a text box in Word 98 Macintosh Edition,
if you then attempt to insert a cross-reference to that caption later in
the document, the figure doesn't appear in the Caption dialog box as an
available selection.
CAUSE
If a caption is placed inside a text box, it must be bookmarked in order to
be cross-referenced. This behavior is by design of Word.
RESOLUTION
To correctly bookmark a caption that is inside a text box for cross-
referencing, follow these steps:
- Select the caption.
- On the Insert menu, click Bookmark.
- Type the Bookmark name, and click Add.
- Place the insertion point in the document where you want the cross-
reference, and click Cross-reference on the Insert menu.
- Under Reference Type, select Bookmark. Under For Which Bookmark,
select the name you added in step 3 and click Insert.
- Click Close.
Your caption should be cross-referenced.
NOTE: You will need to follow these steps each time you want to cross-
reference a caption within a text box.
