WD98: Caption Inserted in Text Box Not Cross-referenced (188547)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q188547

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a caption inside a text box in Word 98 Macintosh Edition, if you then attempt to insert a cross-reference to that caption later in the document, the figure doesn't appear in the Caption dialog box as an available selection.

CAUSE

If a caption is placed inside a text box, it must be bookmarked in order to be cross-referenced. This behavior is by design of Word.

RESOLUTION

To correctly bookmark a caption that is inside a text box for cross- referencing, follow these steps:
  1. Select the caption.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Bookmark.
  3. Type the Bookmark name, and click Add.
  4. Place the insertion point in the document where you want the cross- reference, and click Cross-reference on the Insert menu.
  5. Under Reference Type, select Bookmark. Under For Which Bookmark, select the name you added in step 3 and click Insert.
  6. Click Close.
Your caption should be cross-referenced.

NOTE: You will need to follow these steps each time you want to cross- reference a caption within a text box.
