Err Msg: Setup Has Searched the Specified Directory, But... (188334)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q188334

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Windows 98 on a computer on which Microsoft Windows 3.0 is installed, you may receive the following error message after you type your Product Key and click OK:
Setup has searched the specified directory, but cannot find any qualifying products.

If you are not a licensed user of one of the qualifying products, you must use the full version of Windows 98. Microsoft grants you no license rights to use this upgrade version, and the End User License Agreement included in this package is void.

If you are a licensee of a qualifying product and are having problems, do not exit Setup. Either try Setup again or call Microsoft Product Support Services at the telephone number listed in your manual.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 98 is not designed to upgrade Windows 3.0
