SYMPTOMS

The IAS Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) server that ships with the Windows NT 4.0 Options Pack (NTOP) and Microsoft Commercial Internet Systems (MCIS) does not support port configurations under 1024 for communication to a Network Access Server (NAS) or other radius client software.

RESOLUTION

Windows NT Server or Workstation 4.0

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. This fix allows the use of ports below 1024. Again, Microsoft recommends that customers do not install this fix, unless they have a specific need to use non-standard ports. Continue to use ports 1812/1813 per RFC 2138/2139 r purposed, (Web, FTP, and so on).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 6.

The ability to use non-standard UDP ports was added because of the specification change noted below.

Implementation Note:

This memo documents the RADIUS protocol. There has been some confusion in the assignment of port numbers for this protocol. The early deployment of RADIUS was done using the erroneously chosen port number 1645, which conflicts with the "datametrics" service. The officially assigned port number for RADIUS is 1812.
