OL98: ErrMsg: MAPI32.DLL is Corrupt or the Wrong Version (188211)

SYMPTOMS

When starting Microsoft Outlook 98 for the first time, you may receive the following error message:
Mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version

RESOLUTION

Rename Mapi32.dll, and then run Outlook 98 Setup.

Rename Mapi32.dll

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. Type "Mapi32.dll" (without quotation marks) in the Named box.
  3. In Look In, click to select My Computer. Click Find Now.
  4. With the right mouse button, click to select Mapi32.dll from the list.
  5. Click Rename, and type Mapi32.old. Press ENTER to accept the name change.
NOTE: If there are multiple copies of Mapi32.dll, rename them all.

Re-install Outlook

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click to select Microsoft Outlook 98, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Rerun Outlook 98 Setup.
  5. Click Next on the Outlook 98 Active Setup window.
  6. Click to select your installation option and then click Next.
  7. Double check your E-mail Service Options and then click Next.
  8. Verify the folder to install to and then click Next.
Setup will now replace any missing files with the correct files.

Restart the computer and start Outlook.
