Restore Winsock 1.1 Missing After Upgrade to Windows 98 (188126)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q188126

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Restore Winsock 1.1 may be missing from the list of installed programs in the Add\Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you apply the Winsock 2 patch to Microsoft Windows 95 before you upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows Me.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, Windows 95 installs Winsock 1.1. When you upgrade Windows 95 to Windows 98 or Windows Me, Winsock 1.1 is upgraded to Winsock 2, and Restore Winsock 1.1 is added to the Add/Remove Programs tool so that you can restore your original configuration if needed. If you install the Winsock 2 patch in Windows 95 and then upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows Me, this information is not kept, because Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me are using the same version of Winsock 2 at that point.
