Creative and MKE DVD Players May Not Work with Windows 98/Me (188115)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q188115

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a first-generation Creative DVD kit or MKE DVD kit, the kit may not work properly with Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me). For example, you may no longer be able to write to your DVD-RAM drive.

CAUSE

These DVD kits rely on the Compact Disc File System (CDFS), but Windows 98 loads the Universal Disk Format file system (UDF) by default for DVD drives.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, disable UDF for DVD drives. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Click to select the Disable UDF File System check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
When your computer restarts, UDF is disabled and the DVD kit should work.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior does not occur with later versions of Creative DVD kits. The DXR2 kit works correctly with UDF.
