WD98: Paste Link Broken After Files Transferred to Other Mac (187883)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the link information for paste linked objects may be broken when documents are transferred from one Macintosh to another.

CAUSE

This problem may occur because the path names that link the documents may be invalid after the transfer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reestablish the paste link. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the recipient document.
  2. Select the linked information.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Links.
  4. Click Change Source.
  5. In the Select A Document box, select the correct path.
  6. Click Open.
  7. Click OK
The link should now perform as expected.

To prevent this problem from occurring, transfer documents and retain all paste link information. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Create a new folder in the root directory of the hard disk.
    1. On the File menu, click Save As.
    2. In the drop-down list above the scrollable list of file names, select the hard disk.
    3. Click New Folder, name the folder and then click OK.
    4. In the Save As dialog box, click Cancel.
  2. Save both documents in the new folder.
    1. Open the destination document of the paste link.
    2. On the File menu, click Save As.
    3. Open the folder created in step 1, and then click Save.
    4. Repeat steps a-c for the source document.
  3. Copy the new folder to the other Macintosh.
  4. On the other Macintosh, open the files.
  5. When prompted to "Start external automatic links," click Yes.
Word opens the files with links retained.
