The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q187761

SYMPTOMS

When you are attempting to insert a piece of clip art with Microsoft Clip Gallery, included with Microsoft Publisher 98, if you do don't have the Publisher 98 CD-ROM in the drive you may receive an error message similar to the following
The file '<filename>' is stored on a disk called 'Microsoft Publisher 98 CD.' Please insert the disk.
where <filename> is the file name used for the clip art.

If you click Cancel, you receive the "Cannot Insert Picture" message.

CAUSE

The clip art you are attempting to insert into your publication is located on the Publisher 98 CD-ROM, and the Publisher 98 CD-ROM is not currently in the drive.

RESOLUTION

Insert the Publisher 98 CD-ROM into the drive, wait 5 seconds for the computer to identify the CD, and click Retry. If you no longer have the option to Retry, select the clip and click Insert. The clip should then appear in your publication.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

To work around this problem, install all the clip art to the hard drive. To install all of the Publisher 98 clip art from the compact disc, follow these steps:
  1. With the Publisher 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, select Microsoft Publisher 98 from the List of installed programs and Click Add/Remove.
  4. Select Add/Remove from the Microsoft Publisher 98 Setup window that appears.

This will bring you to a maintenance mode window where you can add or remove options from Publisher 98.
  5. Select Publisher Tools and click Change Options.
  6. From the new list that appears, select ClipArt, and click Change Options.
  7. In the new list that appears, make sure there is a check mark in the "Publisher's Clipart Collection" option.
  8. Click OK twice, and then click Continue.
Setup will then copy the clip art files to your system.

Clip Gallery will now have access to all of the Publisher clip art without needing to access the CD-ROM.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Publisher 98, if you select the Typical installation option, the Setup program installs only the clip art used by the wizards. There is information in the clips that points to the path to these clip art files. Therefore, when you insert a clip, picture, movie, or sound, Clip Gallery knows where to find this file.

A Typical Publisher 98 installation leaves the clip art files on the CD- ROM because they take up a lot of space on the hard disk. If you copy all the clip art files to your hard drive, it may take an additional 212 megabytes (MB) or more of hard disk space.
