SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Windows 98 and then restart your computer, you may receive the following error message:
A required .dll file, Msvcrt.dll, was not found.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a shortcut to MSN Quick View is located in the StartUp folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove the shortcut to MSN Quick View from the StartUp folder. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.
  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Remove.
  3. Double-click the StartUp folder.
  4. Click MSN Quick View, and then click Remove.
  5. Click Close, click OK, and then restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

MSN Quick View relies on the Msvcrt.dll file for some of its functionality. When you uninstall Windows 98, the Msvcrt.dll file is removed, but the shortcut to MSN Quick View remains in the StartUp folder. As a result, when MSN Quick View is started, it cannot locate the Msvcrt.dll file.
