Word Hangs If Merged Labels Use Single-Column Data Source (187255)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q187255

SYMPTOMS

When you click Insert Merge Field on the Create Labels dialog box as you are setting up a mail merge, the Header Record Delimiters dialog box will appear and your machine will either hang (stop responding) or Word will close and the following error message will appear:
The application "Microsoft Word" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred. You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.
Clicking OK, closes Word without the ability to save any work.

This problem occurs if you are using a single-field data source (one column).

CAUSE

The Header Record Delimiters dialog box is prompting you to select the character to separate fields and records in the data file. For example, in many multiple-field data files, a comma is used to separate each field and a paragraph (hard carriage return) is used to separate each record. In the case of a single field data file, there is no field separator.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
