To diagnose some problems you may encounter when you start or use Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs, you may need to start the computer by using the operating system software on your system compact disc (CD). However, to start the computer from your system CD and still be able to start Office programs, you must move a few Office files. This article explains the steps to use to start the computer from your system CD and run the Office programs.

Restarting from the System CD

Some functionality in the Office programs is not available after you follow these steps. You can start the programs, but you cannot use some features, such as the wizards, Visual Basic for Applications macros, or printing. Also, depending on the amount of random access memory (RAM) that is installed on your computer, you may receive out-of-memory error messages because Virtual Memory is not available.

To start your computer from the system CD and start any of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the system CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and then click Startup Disk.
  3. Select the CD-ROM drive. Close the Startup Disk control panel.
  4. On the Special menu, click Restart.

    This step restarts the computer.
  5. Use the Finder to open the System Folder:Extensions folder on the hard disk.
  6. Copy the following files from the Extensions folder into the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on the hard disk:

    Microsoft Component Library
    Microsoft OLE Automation
    Microsoft OLE Library
    Microsoft Structured Storage

  7. Start any Office program.
After completing steps 1 through 6, the following behavior occurs:
  • When you start Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you receive the following alert message:
    One of your object libraries (Standard OLE Types (PowerMac)) is
    missing or damaged. Please install the program again.
    However, Excel starts.
  • A dialog box asks you to confirm your user name and initials each time you start any of the Office programs.
  • After Microsoft Excel is started, you may receive the following error message when you try to do anything in the program:
    Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there
    is not enough available memory or disk space.

    - To make more memory available, close workbooks or programs you no
    longer need.

    - To free disk space, delete files you no longer need from the disk
    you are saving to.
    To use Excel without receiving this error message, open an existing workbook that does not contain any Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications macros.

Restarting from the Hard Disk Again

After you finish testing the Office programs while your computer is running from the system CD, reset your settings so that the computer starts from the hard disk again. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Apple menu, click Control Panels.
  2. Double-click Startup Disk.
  3. Select your hard disk with the System Folder.
  4. Close the Startup Disk control panel.
  5. On the Special menu, click Restart.
Your computer is restarted from the System Folder on your hard disk.
