SYMPTOMS

The following is an example of an error message that may appear with the Internet Mail Server 1.0 SMTP service:
Connection to with IP Address 172.21.13.45 failed from microsoft.com- 172.21.14.98
Smtp service could not retrieve error string for error code 10061
someone@samples.microsoft.com

CAUSE

This error occurs when the Internet Mail Server 1.0 SMTP service is configured to forward messages to a smart host that has no SMTP service listening on port 25.

RESOLUTION

Configure the SMTP service to forward messages to a valid smart host.
