The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q186367 SYMPTOMS
After you install a Hewlett-Packard CD-ROM Re-Writable (CD-RW) drive in
some Compaq Deskpro computers, your computer may stop responding (hang)
when you try to view a window such as My Computer or Windows Explorer that
may point to the Hewlett-Packard CD-RW drive.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because Compaq uses a custom device driver file
named Cpqdfvs.vxd. This file is located in the \Windows\System\Iosubsys
folder, and can cause your computer to hang when you try to read from the
CD-RW drive.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, delete or rename the Cpqdfvs.vxd file. For
information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the
Index tab, type renaming, and then
double-click the "Renaming files" topic.
To resolve this issue, contact Compaq to inquire if they have a fix for
this issue.
