PRJ: Incorrect Work Values After Edit Replace Resource (185878)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you use Replace (on the Edit menu) to replace items in the Resource Names or Resource Initials fields, task work may be different than assignment work.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The current view is a task view.

  • The table applied in the current view includes a column for the Resource Names field or the Resource Initials field.

  • You use Replace on the Edit menu to replace a single resource name or initials with multiple resource names or initials.
NOTE: This problem occurs if the current table contains the Resource Names column or the Resource Initials column, even if the column is not visible because the column width is zero.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do not use Replace on the Edit menu to add or replace resources on a task. Instead, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Resource Assignment Dialog Box

Replace resources on tasks or assign additional resources to tasks using the Resource Assignment dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Resources, and then click Assign Resources.
  2. Select the task for which you want to add or replace a resource.
  3. To assign a resource:
    1. In the Assign Resources dialog box, click the resource you want to assign to the selected task.
    2. Click in the Units column next to the resource name you selected in step a, and then type how many units of that resource you want to assign.
    3. Click Assign.NOTE: You can repeat steps a-c as many times as needed.

  4. To replace a resource:

    1. In the Assign Resources dialog box, click the resource you want to replace for the selected task.
    2. Click Replace.
    3. In the Replace Resource dialog box, click the resource you want to assign to the selected task.
    4. Click in the Units column next to the resource name you selected in step a, and then type how many units of that resource you want to assign.
    5. Click OK.
    NOTE: You can repeat steps a-e as many times as needed.
  5. Click Close when finished assigning and replacing resources.

Method 2: Use the Task Information Dialog Box

Replace resources on tasks or assign additional resources to tasks using the Task Information dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the task for which you want to add or replace a resource.
  2. On the Project menu, click Task Information.
  3. In the Task Information dialog box, click the Resources tab.
  4. To assign a resource:

    1. Under Resources, in the Resource Name column, click the first empty cell, click the drop-down arrow in the empty cell, and then click the resource name you want to assign.
    2. Click in the Units column next to the resource name you selected in step a, and then type how many units of that resource you want to assign.
    NOTE: You can repeat steps a-b as many times as needed.
  5. To replace a resource:

    1. Under Resources, in the Resource Name column, click the resource you want to replace.
    2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the resource name you selected in step a, and then click the resource you want to assign.
    3. Click in the Units column next to the resource name you selected in step b, and then type how many units of that resource you want to assign.
    NOTE: You can repeat steps a-c as many times as needed.
  6. Click OK when finished assigning and replacing resources.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
