SYMPTOMS

After the zone transfer from a primary DNS server to the secondary DNS server is completed, the secondary DNS server may have an access violation if the zone file has a WINS resource record for the forward lookup zone.

CAUSE

The DNS server has an access violation because it is trying to use the freed memory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
