GW: Problems with Some Mitsumi !b CD-ROM Drives (185661)

SYMPTOMS

Some older CD-ROM drives seem to lock up when trying to read the Greetings Workshop compact disc. The Greetings Workshop compact disc may have worked fine for a period of time, and then quits working suddenly.

NOTE: This behavior is not unique to Mitsumi drives.

CAUSE

Microsoft has been unable to reproduce this error and the exact cause is not known at this time. Possible causes include:

  • A damaged or dirty CD-ROM.

  • CD-ROM loading with the Real-Mode (16-bit) driver.
  • Incorrect Read-Ahead setting.

RESOLUTION

At this time there is no known resolution. The following procedures may help in resolving or defining the issue:

  1. Clean the compact disc with a soft, clean cloth slightly dampened with water and wipe the disc from the center out to the edge - NOT in a circular motion.
  2. To check for a damaged compact disc, copy files from the compact disc to the hard drive or try reading the compact disc on another computer.
  3. Remove the real-mode driver (if present). On the Mitsumi, the real-mode driver is MTMCDAI.SYS.

    To disable the MTMCDAI.SYS driver:

    1. Start Sysedit.exe.
    2. Locate and remark out the line in the Config.sys file:

      Device=C:\MTM\MTMCDAI.SYS/D:MTMIDE01

    3. Save the file, exit, and then restart the computer.
    4. Check the Device Manager for the following entry under CD-ROM:

      CDROM: Mitsumi CD-ROM drive !B(or !A)

      If the above entry exists, then the protected-mode (32-bit) driver is loaded correctly. If the entry does not exist, then the system is using an outdated real-mode driver.   4. The Windows 95 CD-ROM file system with protected-mode drivers includes a "Read-Ahead" feature that is designed to provide smoother video playback, with faster and more efficient data streaming. The Read-Ahead feature can cause the CD-ROM drive controller to be driven faster than it was designed to be.
