SYMPTOMS

When your computer restarts for the first time during the installation of Windows 98, you may receive a Java Package Manager dialog box with only an OK button on it. If you click OK, the message disappears, but Setup does not continue. Or, when you try to install the Java.inf file, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to install java package from
c:\windows\java\classes\win32ie4.cab.

After you receive this error message, the installation process stops.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, end the Java Package Manager task, finish Setup, and then install the Java.inf file manually. To do so, use the following steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click Java Package Manager, and then click End Task.
  2. If you are prompted, click End Task again.
  3. After Setup finishes and before you remove the Windows 98 CD-ROM from your CD-ROM drive, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  4. In the Named box, type java.inf, click your CD-ROM drive in the Look In box, and then click Find Now.
  5. Right-click the Java.inf file in the list of found files, and then click Install.
  6. Quit the Find tool.
  7. Test to determine if the issue is resolved, and if it is not, delete all the files in the Windows\Java folder, and then reinstall the Java.inf file again.

NOTE: Do not delete the Windows\Java folder itself.

MORE INFORMATION

The Java.inf file is in the Tools\Mtsutil folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
