This article was previously published under Q185209

SYMPTOMS

During Windows 98 Setup, you may receive the following error message:
Setup had trouble copying a file Disk Write Fault error #1d.

You may also receive the following error messages while working in Windows or an MS-DOS session:
Invalid Device Request writing\reading device...

Duplicate filename or file in use

Cannot(copy\rename\delete) Cannot find the specified file.

Cannot Create or Access...

Access Denied

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you try to access a file that has the same name as a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) device driver ID on your computer or the same name as a hardware port on your computer. For example, if your computer uses a CD-ROM driver with the device ID "MSCD001", you would be unable to access any file named "MSCD001".

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run ScanDisk. To do so, click Start, click Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click ScanDisk. When you run ScanDisk, ScanDisk renames the files that have the same name as the driver ID or hardware port.
