OL97: Office Subfolders in Outlook If Outlook Installed First (184950)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 97
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q184950

SUMMARY

Installing Microsoft Office programs after installing Microsoft Outlook 97 into its own custom folder causes the following folders to appear as subfolders of the Outlook folder:

Clipart
Office
Queries
Templates

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Microsoft Office 97 or any Office program into the suggested default folders, the Clipart, Office, Queries and Templates folders become subfolders of the Microsoft Office Folder. However, if you first install Outlook into its own folder, such as C:\Outlook, and then install Microsoft Word into a different folder, the Clipart, Office, Queries and Templates folders will become subfolders of the Outlook folder instead of subfolders of the Word folder.

WORKAROUND

To fix the problem uninstall Microsoft Office, and then install it to the default folder. Since Outlook is part of Office 97 it will be installed as part of the Typical installation option. Any patches will need to be reapplied after you are finished with the installation.

NOTE: If you had installed the Office SR-1 Patch, you will need to uninstall it first before uninstalling Microsoft Office 97. The steps to remove the SR-1 patch are similar to those used to remove Office. You can use the steps below and select the SR-1 patch from the list on the Install/Uninstall tab.

Uninstall Microsoft Office

  1. Place your Office CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. Click Remove All, and then click Yes to verify that you do want to remove all of Office.

If prompted with a Remove Shared Components dialog box, click Remove All.
  6. Click to Restart Windows.

Install Microsoft Office

  1. Place your Office CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  3. Click to open Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. Click Continue, and fill in all the requested information until you get to the screen that says:

Setup will install Microsoft Office in the following destination Folder.

  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Typical, and then click Continue.
  9. Click to Restart Windows.
The Clipart, Office, Queries, and Templates folders will be subfolders of the Microsoft Office folder.
