SYMPTOMS

If you use a PC Card to connect a Handheld PC (H/PC) to a desktop computer, you may not be able to log on to your Local Area Network (LAN).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:

  • The H/PC does not have a unique computer name on the LAN.
  • Windows CE does not support the PC Card.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps. Test to see if the behavior still occurs after each step.
  1. Check the name of the H/PC to make sure it has a unique computer name on the network. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Tap Start, tap Settings, and then tap Control Panel.
    2. Double-tap Communications.
    3. In the Device Name box, type a unique computer name for the H/PC.
  2. Verify that Windows CE supports the PC Card you are using. To view a list of PC Cards supported by Windows CE, please see the following Microsoft Web site: If Windows CE does not support your PC Card, obtain a supported PC Card.
If Windows CE supports your PC Card, continue to the next step.
  3. Remove and reinstall the remote networking connection. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Tap Start, tap Programs, tap Communication, and then tap Remote Networking.
    2. Tap the network connection your PC Card uses, press the Delete (DEL) key, and then tap OK.
    3. Remove the PC Card, and then reset the H/PC. To do so, please see the H/PC's printed documentation or contact the hardware manufacturer.
    4. Insert the PC Card, tap Start, tap Programs, tap Communication, and then tap Remote Networking.
    5. Double-tap Make New Connection, type a name for the connection, tap Direct Connection, and then tap Next.
    6. Tap the port you want to use, and then tap Finish.
