SYMPTOMS
In any of the programs that are listed at the beginning of this article, if
you click a hyperlink that is contained in a worksheet, document, or
presentation, you may receive the following error message:
No program is registered to open this file.
RESOLUTION
To resolve these problems, use one of the following methods.
If Many Programs Are Running Simultaneously
Before you click the hyperlink again, save your work and quit one or more
running programs. You can switch between programs by clicking a program
icon on the application menu, which is in the upper-right corner of the
screen. After you have quit the programs, switch back to the Microsoft
Office 98 program and click the hyperlink.
If the Hyperlink Is Linked to a Large Program
If the hyperlink is linked to a program that requires a large amount of
memory, you may be able to prevent the problem by reducing the amount of
memory that is required by the program. To do this, follow these steps:
- Using the Finder, locate the program, and select its icon.
- On the File menu, click Get Info.
- In the Memory Requirements section, reduce the amounts in the Minimum
Size and Preferred Size boxes.
- Click the Close button in the upper-left corner of the Info dialog
box.
After you have made this change, switch back to the program that contains
the hyperlink and click the hyperlink.
NOTE: Before you reduce the amount of memory that is required by a program,
you may need to check with the program vendor. Reducing the memory
requirements for a program may cause the program to run unreliably or not
at all.
If You Have Not Turned On Virtual Memory
The programs in Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition are designed to run
with virtual memory available. If you have not turned on virtual memory,
each program requires more memory when you run it. Consequently, little or
no free memory may be available when you click the hyperlink.
To turn on virtual memory, follow these steps:
- On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and click Memory.
- Under Virtual Memory, click On.
- Click the Close button in the upper-left corner of the dialog box.
- On the Special menu, click Restart.
After your computer is restarted, start the Microsoft Office 98 program
that includes the hyperlink and click the hyperlink.
If Your Computer Does Not Have Much Memory Installed
Although the programs included in Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition are
designed to run on a computer with a minimum of 16 megabytes (MB) of
installed memory, more memory is required if you intend to run multiple
programs simultaneously. If you want to run multiple programs, a minimum of
32 MB of memory should be installed.
You can check the amount of installed memory by clicking About This
Computer on the Apple menu. The Built-In Memory amount represents the
amount of installed memory.
