SYMPTOMS

When you open a file that contains a saved query, the query is not updated. As a result, the region of the worksheet that contains the query is blank.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You have saved a query in your worksheet. -and-

  • You click "Refresh data on file open" in the External Data Range Properties dialog box. -and-

  • You click "Remove external data from worksheet before saving" in the External Data Range Properties dialog box. -and-

  • You save the file in the "Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook" file format.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Select a cell in the region of the worksheet that contains the query.
  2. On the Data menu, click Refresh Data.
The worksheet is populated with the result set from the query. The worksheet is populated with the result set from your query the next time that you open the file. However, the query is not updated the next time you open the file.

The "Refresh data on file open" and "Remove external data from worksheet before saving" commands are not available in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel. As a result, these features are not available when you save the file in the "Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook" file format.
