SYMPTOMS

When you play a movie that is embedded in your document, one or more of the following problems may occur:

  • Your computer may stop responding.
  • The movie may disappear and then reappear.
  • The movie disappears, but the controls for the movie are still visible.
  • The movie appears to start playing, and colored lines appear on the screen.
  • You may receive one of the following error messages
    The application <program> has unexpectedly quit, because an
    error of type 1 occurred.

    You should save your work in other open applications and restart the
    computer.

    -or-

    The application <program> has unexpectedly quit, because an
    error of type 1 occurred.

    You should save your work in other open applications and restart the
    computer.

    -or-

    Sorry, a system error occurred.

    where <program> is the name of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition program that you are running.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You insert a movie into your document.

    -and-
  • The movie is stored on another computer.

    -and-
  • The computer on which the movie is stored is shut down.

    -and-
  • You attempt to play the movie.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
