WD98: Word Creates Hyperlink If @ Symbol Appears Inside Quotation Marks (184140)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q184140 SYMPTOMS
Word creates a hyperlink if you enclose text that contains the at (@) symbol in
quotation marks. This behavior occurs when you type a character after typing the
closing quotation mark.
CAUSE
This problem appears because the AutoCorrect feature sees this as a
URL (Universal Resource Locator). It removes the quotation marks and converts
the text string inside the quotation marks to a hyperlink.
WORKAROUND
Immediately after the text is converted to a hyperlink, press BACKSPACE, press
COMMAND+Z, or click Undo on the Edit menu to remove the hyperlink formatting and
retain the original format.
You can also prevent Word from automatically converting the text by following
these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.
- Click the "AutoFormat as you type" tab.
- Under "Replace as you type," click to clear the "Internet and network
paths with hyperlinks" option.
- Click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
This AutoCorrect functionality allows you to automatically create
hyperlinks that contain spaces and some other non-standard characters or
formatting (such as two @ symbols), by enclosing them in quotation
marks.
