The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q184015

SYMPTOMS

If you run the installer program for any of the stand-alone Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs, the program may be installed in the System Folder.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you do the following:
  1. You install one of the stand-alone Office 98 programs.
  2. You move the Microsoft Office 98 file to a folder in the System Folder.

The Microsoft Office 98 file is normally stored in the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder. If you move this file to a subfolder in the System Folder, such as the Extensions folder, the problem described in this article occurs.
  3. You then run the installer program for a different stand-alone Office 98 program.
The program files for the stand-alone Office 98 program you installed in step 3 are installed in the System Folder.

WORKAROUND

To remove the Office 98 program from the System Folder, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the compact disc (CD) for the last Office program that you have installed.
  2. Double-click <Program Name> Installer, where <Program Name> is the name of the program that was installed in the System Folder.

For example, double-click Microsoft Excel Installer if you want to remove Excel from the System Folder.
  3. In the list box, click Remove.
  4. Click Remove to begin the remove operation.
  5. Click OK in the dialog box that indicates the remove operation was successful.
  6. Click Quit to close the Microsoft Office Installer.
  7. Move the Microsoft Office 98 file from the System Folder to the Trash.
The Office program is removed from your System Folder. Next, reinstall each of the Office 98 programs.
