PPT98: Incorrect Symbol Inserted Using Shortcut Key w/Some Fonts (183922)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q183922

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a symbol from one of the following typefaces, a symbol other than the one you selected may appear.

Wingdings
Wingdings 2
Wingdings 3
Monotype Sorts
Symbol
Zapf Dingbats

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you use a shortcut key to insert the symbol. PowerPoint incorrectly maps a decorative or symbol font to the shortcut key. For example, if you are using the Wingdings font and you press OPTION+A, a southwest arrow appears instead of a (1) bullet item.

WORKAROUND

You can work around this behavior and a insert symbol in your presentation by using the Symbol dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click the text box where you want to insert the symbol.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Symbol.
  3. In the Font list, select the font you want to use.
  4. Click the symbol you want to use and click Insert.
  5. Click Close.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
