When you are prompted to enter your user name and initials the first time you run an Office program, "Microsoft Office User" and the initials "MOU" may appear in the fields instead of the user name you entered at the beginning of the installation process.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You perform a drag-and-drop installation of Office 98 or one of the stand-alone Office 98 programs from the Microsoft Office 98 folder or the Office Custom Install folder.

    -and-
  • You then start Microsoft Office Installer in the Office Custom Install folder and click Custom Install or Easy Install to install Office 98 or one of the stand-alone Office 98 programs.

    -and-
  • You start one of the Office 98 programs.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps.

  1. Move Microsoft Office 98 from the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder to the Trash.
  2. Move Microsoft Office Settings (8) from the System Folder:Preferences folder to the Trash.
  3. Move Microsoft OLE Automation from the System Folder:Extensions folder to the Trash, and then empty the Trash.
  4. Open the Office Custom Install folder on the Office 98 compact disc (CD). Double-click the Microsoft Office Installer.
  5. When the Microsoft Office Installer menu appears, click Custom Install in the list, and then click Install. Follow the instructions to finish the installation.
After installation is completed, start any of the Office 98 programs. Notice that the licensed user and product ID fields are no longer blank.
