XL98: Analysis ToolPak Error: "Cannot Add Chart to a Shared Workbook" (183188)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Exponential Smoothing, Histogram, Moving Average, or Regression tool in the Analysis ToolPak, and you click OK, you may receive the following error message:
<Tool Name> - Cannot add chart to shared workbook.
Continue creating output table?
Where <Tool Name> is the name of the analysis tool that you are using.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You do the following to create a chart for the analysis tool that you are using:

    • You click to select the Chart Output check box in the Exponential Smoothing, or Moving Average dialog box.

      -or-
    • You click to select the Residual Plots or the Line Fit Plots check boxes in the Regression dialog box.
    -and-
  • You click Output Range or New Worksheet Ply under Output Options to return the results to the source workbook.

    -and-
  • The "Analysis ToolPak - VBA" add-in is not loaded.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

To install the updated ProcDBRes file, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Microsoft Excel.
  2. Use an appropriate program to decode and decompress the add-in.
  3. Copy the ProcDBRes file to the following folder:

    Microsoft Office 98:Office:Excel Add-Ins:Analysis Tools

You will not receive an error message the next time that you use any of the analysis tools to create a chart.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods. Method 1 is a permanent workaround, and Method 2 is appropriate only if you are using the Histogram or the Regression tool.

Method 1 - Load the Analysis TookPak - VBA Add-In:

To use this method, load the Analysis ToolPak - VBA Add-in. If the add-in is not installed, use the Value Pack Installer to install it. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Microsoft Office 98 compact disc (CD-ROM) into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Open the Value Pack folder on the Office 98 CD-ROM.
  3. Double-click the Value Pack Installer icon.
  4. In the Value Pack Installer, click the triangle next to Programmability.
  5. Click to select the "Excel Analysis Toolpack VBA support" check box, and then click Install.
  6. Click Quit to click the Value Pack Installer.
  7. Start Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
  8. On the Tools menu, click Add-Ins.
  9. Click to select the "Analysis ToolPak - VBA" check box and click OK.
You can use the Exponential Smoothing, Histogram, Moving Average, or Regression tools in the Analysis ToolPak to create chart output.

Method 2 - Create a New Workbook:

If you are using the Histogram or Regression tool, you can work around the problem by clicking New Workbook under Output Options.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
