SYMPTOMS

On a computer with the original release of Windows 95 (version 4.00.950), if you run the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) standalone setup program, the dialog box for the setup program appears 10-20 times wider than the screen. If you slide the dialog box over to click the "NEXT" button, it crashes on the next step in the setup process.

CAUSE

This is because the MDAC Standalone Setup program requires versions of the OLE Automation Components and Comctl32.dll file that were shipped after the original version of Windows 95 was released.

Many products install later versions of both OLE Automation and the Comctl32.dll file, including Visual Basic 5.0, Internet Explorer 3.02, Visual C++ 5.0, and so forth. However, it is possible to have a Windows 95 computer without the later versions of one or both of these components.

RESOLUTION

Install the OLE Automation and Comctl32.dll file patches before running the MDAC Setup program. Both patches must be installed for the MDAC Setup program to work correctly. Please refer to the REFERENCES section for the articles that contain information on obtaining the patches.
