OFF98: Remove Office 98 Utility Issue (182936)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Remove Office 98 program, your System Folder is moved to the Trash.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You manually move a copy of the Microsoft Office 98 file to a subfolder in the System Folder.

    -and-

  • You run Remove Office 98 and click Discard in the dialog box that indicates that one or more copies of Microsoft Office 98 have been found.
NOTE: The Microsoft Office 98 file is normally stored in the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder. If this file is moved to a subfolder in the System Folder, such as the Extensions folder, the problem described in this article occurs.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the following appropriate method.

Method 1: If You Have Not Emptied the Trash

To work around the problem, follow these steps before you restart the computer:
  1. Double-click the Trash.
  2. Drag the System Folder to the hard disk.
After you do this, the System Folder is restored. However, the copy of the Microsoft Office 98 file that has caused this problem remains in the System Folder.

To remove the Microsoft Office 98 file from the System Folder, follow these steps:
  1. On the Special menu, click Empty Trash.

    If you are prompted to empty the Trash, click OK.
  2. Click Find on the File menu and click Name in the leftmost list in the Find File window.
  3. Click Is in the center list.
  4. Type Microsoft Office 98 in the rightmost box.
  5. Click Find.

    Drag any copies that are listed in the Items Found window to the Trash.
  6. Close the Items Found window.
  7. Close the Find File window.

Method 2 - If You Already Emptied the Trash

In some cases, you may not be able to restart the computer after you empty the Trash. If you cannot restart the computer, restart the computer by using a System compact disc (CD) or a bootable floppy disk. After you start the computer from the System CD, you must reinstall the Macintosh operating system software.

Remove Office 98 is a utility program that is used to remove Office 98 from a computer. This program is not installed with Office 98, nor is it installed by the Value Pack Installer. If you choose not to use the Remove Office 98 program, it does not affect the functionality of the Office 98 programs.
