XL98: Cannot Drag Cells When You Use AutoFilter (182875)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98, when you try to drag cells, you receive the following error message:
The command you chose cannot be performed with multiple selections. Select a single range and click the command again.

CAUSE

This error may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • You are using AutoFilter to sort a range that includes a hidden column. -and-

  • You are trying to drag a range of cells, and the location to which you are dragging the cells contains the hidden column.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, unhide the hidden column, and then drag the cells. For example, follow these steps:
  1. In a new worksheet, hide column G. To do this, select column G. Point to Column on the Format menu, and then click Hide.
  2. Unhide column G. To do this, select columns F and H. Point to Column on the Format menu, and then click Unhide.

    Column G reappears.
NOTE: To unhide every column in the workbook, click the Select All Cells button, point to Columns on the Format menu, and then click Unhide.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
